Our 4th award from New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)

St. Nicks Alliance has achieved another New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Buildings of Excellence Award; this time for 819 Grand Street. Several other of our developments (in partnership) have received this honor such as: Dekalb Commons (with Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corp), 2nd Phase of Kingsland Commons/Maspeth Park (with Hudson Companies Inc.), and Bushwick Alliance (with RiseBoro Community Partnership).

819 Grand Street will be an affordable senior housing residence in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn and will embody a dynamic model for sustainability and energy efficiency. The 217-unit, 14-story, all-electric building is designed to Passive House standards and will utilize geothermal heating and cooling, a rooftop solar canopy, and resiliency measures. 819 Grand will connect to Jennings Hall (260 Powers Street), a 150-unit affordable senior housing residence. This will create campus-style affordable senior housing for 367 residents with over 11,000 square feet of amenities, 13,500 square feet of open space, and 5,000 square feet of neighborhood retail space. Building is located outside of the 500-year floodplain, will have mechanical ventilation supplied to common areas during power outages, with outlets and refrigerator operational in common areas, and the building will have an area of refuge for residents.  Curtis + Ginsberg Architects designed the building.

NYSERDA’s Buildings of Excellence competition recognizes best in class buildings, with prizes of up to $1 million for demonstration projects and up to $100,000 in funding for early design support.  The contest’s purpose is to show that decarbonized multifamily buildings can be profitable, affordable, beautiful and healthy places to live.

Workforce Center Receives Federal $

On June 18, U.S. Representative Nydia Velázquez presented $1M in federal funding to St. Nicks Alliance Workforce Development Center to support their relocation to an upgraded facility.

“This center serves 1000s of New Yorkers annually, providing them with in-demand skills training & placement in living wage jobs. There is a great need right now for skilled workers, and there is a shortage. This is the way that we empower young people and give them a fighting chance,” said Velázquez.

At the beginning of 2025 St. Nicks Alliance’s Workforce Development Center (currently at 790 Broadway) will relocate to an upgraded facility at the Throop Corners (88 Throop Avenue). Currently under construction, Throop Corners is a 100% affordable housing development in The Broadway Triangle community.

“St. Nicks Alliance new Workforce Development will accommodate our growing education, employment and education services. Our in-demand training in the green trades, tech, healthcare and financial services sectors serve adults 18 and over and young adults ages 18–24. The more cost effective new space will better accommodate our services to North Brooklyn for job seekers and the underemployed,” said Larry Rothchild, senior managing director for St. Nicks Alliance Workforce Development Center.

St. Nicks Alliance Summer Mentorships Shine

Summer campers and Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) interns are growing each year at St. Nicks Alliance. This year we have 2691 enrolled from 3930 who applied. Local employers and community and service organizations have provided 300 worksites for SYEP.

Our campers are experiencing unique learning opportunities.  For one the Pfizer School of Science trip, gave the students training as immunologists.  They explored innate and adaptive immunity in a game scenario.  Students then tried to diagnose patients by matching their symptoms to those of an infectious disease.  After hypothesizing their diagnosis, they analytically verified their hypothesis by running a mock ELISA test.

12th ANNUAL M5K SETS RECORDS!

On the morning of June 15 over 900 runners and walkers participated in the Dime McCarren 5K, which starts and ends at McCarren Park. That’s over twice as many as last year’s 5K! NYC District 33’s Council Member Lincoln Restler stopped by to give his support. In  addition to the amazing community participation, St. Nicks Alliance staff ran and formed teams in increased numbers.
